What is scurvy
Scurvy is a disease triggered by the lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the body.
Its symptoms are bleeding and gingival inflammation with consequent loss of teeth, inflammation and joint pain, hair loss, among others. This disease can even trigger anemia due to minor bleeding.

Vitamin C deficiency is also known to affect connective tissue, which, besides being richly vascularized, acts as a support to the walls of blood vessels, bone, dentin, cartilage, etc.
Until the eighteenth century, the occurrence of scurvy was quite common among sailors, because they spent months at sea without eating fresh fruits and vegetables, because this type of food spoil very fast, its stock was not guaranteed. As a result, sailors ran out of vitamin C and were eventually affected by scurvy, and many of them could not resist and eventually died.
From 1795 the regular distribution of lime juice began among sailors of the British crew. Later, sources rich in vitamin C than lime were introduced, such as oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits.
